News...new ewes...Last night we headed up the road about 12 miles to fetch two shetland ewes that we traded some lamb meat for. They are well fed girls! Poor Nate could barely heft them in the truck (mind you this is the man who hauled a 800 lb. bale of hay in a sled today, with no cylinders involved.) It was dark when we got them home so we put them in the pasture with Hee-haw. This afternoon I assessed them in the daylight and we opened the gate and allowed them to join the flock. Bam was most excited at some fresh...ummm...blood, to sniff and perform other acts on. Bunny was alread receptive to his antics. Mark the calendar.
The new girls are named Sunny, and Bunny, complements of Kohen. They are a mother/daughter duo, with the daughter being two years old. I'm not worried about them getting pushed around by anyone, they have plenty to push back with!
Their fleece is beautiful. Sunny, the mom has some nice markings (I'll have to look up the shetland terms for them.) Bunny is beautiful too, though her tail is a bit long. I know that Bam will be able to improve it on any offspring that may have been conceived today.

In other news, our chickens have finally started to lay again. We need to make some modifications to the coop, we are losing eggs to the cold weather. We are down to 6 laying hens; 4 ameraucanas, and 2 buff orphingtons, along with the banties. We've been getting 4-5 eggs per day, so I'm happy. I also am getting some more layers soon. It's nice not to have to buy the anemic, pathetic store eggs anymore. I ended up having to buy 3 dozen earlier this fall when the ducks quit laying and the chickens were moulting.

Hi Tifany,
Those new girls are VERY pretty. I loved the recent posts about Bam too. Sounds like he is very virile! :) To be honest, he made some serious attempts on the older ewes this past summer. I think he has a little more testosterone than the average boy. (I'm thinking of the Yogi Bear song.)
When I saw the photo of him I realized that his black nose is more of a marking than just a few random poka dots. If you are a NASSA member you could find the appropriate marking name and update his profile with it. It won't change his registration papers but it is of interest. I'm not an expert, but I have not seen another ram like that. Although Nancy Krohn's White Night has a similar marking but I think it is not a dramatic. Just found it interesting.
Well, the blizzard has definitely hit us. Church and Buena Vista are cancelled. They are talking of closing school tomorrow too. I'm feeding almost twice the hay just to make sure the bellies stay full during this cold and wind.
Best to all of you up there. Tell the birthday boy I like the new sheep names. Very cute!
Stay warm and safe.
Sabrina
