Demi- black in back, Kizzy in front
Plum on the left, Sugar on the right. (not sure which one Rayna named which, but this is what we decide on.)Meet the four newest additions to our flock. On Sunday we drove to Barnum and went to Northstar Shetlands, we acquired these four ladies from Rayna. Kizzy is a 3/4 shetland, Demi is a full shetland, and Sugar and Plum are Kizzy's lambs from this year. They are currently in quarintine, but doing well. Our plan is to get the new gates up and fence finished in the next couple of days, and then everyone can be turned out together. We weighed everyone to get a handle on condition, and to worm. I went back and forth as to if I should blanket worm (worm everyone) with chemical wormer or not. I decided that for my peace of mind I would. I know that my sheep are healthy, but after the horrors of last spring I wanted security. This may be the last time I complete this procedure since my goal is to get organic certification, and then blanket worming is not allowed. I checked membranes when I was up close and personal with everyone and they looked very good. (A sheep with worms is anemic and will have pale membranes on their eyelids, and nose.) I was also impressed with the weights we got. Most of the ewes weighed at least 20 pounds heavier then in April. In an 85 pound animal, that is a substantial weight gain. They look healthy, their fleece is growing beautifully, and they are active. What more can a shepherd ask for?
